We believe that extracurricular activities and courses can provide students with a “reality check”. Young people don’t naturally stumble on what their passions in life are as easily as characters do in movies. It is often a trial-and-error process, which involves putting on different academic or professional hats to find out which one fits perfectly.

Through summer school programmes and workshops, students come face-to-face with what the real workloads and demands of a subject are, and can decide whether or not it really suits them. If it does not, they can return to the drawing board and re-evaluate what degree would truly excite them. This helps avoid spending valuable time preparing and even studying for the “wrong” degree.

Angloslav guides students to the right workshops and programmes. Whether it is to develop their skills in a particular area or to learn more about a particular subject, we know which programmes would suit them best. We run our own courses: Motivational Leadership Training (MLT) and University Selective Entry Training (UNISET). These help students develop their leadership and management skills, as well as supporting them through the crucial stages of university application.

The choice and number of extracurricular commitments that a student takes depends on what they are like as an individual and where they aspire to go following school graduation. Certain universities value scholarship over everything else. It is therefore best that a student focuses on their work rather than being overwhelmed with after school clubs and societies.

It is common for some students to become so involved with extracurricular activities, such as running events and holding meetings with their peers, that they become distracted from their schoolwork and prioritise their extracurricular commitments over their academic study. This has a negative impact on their eligibility for elite universities in the UK, for which outstanding grades are amongst the most important requirements.

Angloslav ensures that students take on a manageable amount and the right variety of extracurricular commitments and that the quantity and type of activities that they participate in compliment their plans for future study. We recommend extracurricular activities when they support a student’s personal development as the interview stage of premier higher education institutions evaluates students’ personalities and behaviours alongside their grades. Students who are academically strong but shy may be advised to attend a course such as Motivation Leadership Training (MLT) and University Selecting Entry Training (UNISET) to build their confidence and ability to express themselves, which will help them shine in interview situations.
