IB subjects are marked according to a point scale, from 1 to 7. 7 is the highest possible grade for an individual subject and 1 is the lowest. There are an additional 3 points available for the extended essay project and theory of knowledge. The total marks available are 45 points.

The IB Diploma is awarded to candidates who achieve a score of at least 24 or more, granted they meet additional requirements regarding the marks achieved in higher level and standard level subjects.

The minimum standard for university eligibility for IB students differs according to the university and course in question. Universities may consider students who achieve a pass in the IB (24 points or more), though the majority of universities’ minimum standards begin at 28-30 points.

SELECTIVE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

38-40 points are typically requested of IB students from the most prestigious universities in the UK, such as Oxford and Cambridge. Students will be expected to achieve 6 and 7 points in higher level subjects, particularly those which are relevant to their chosen degrees. Any offer that a student receives from a prospective university will be ultimately dependent upon the final grades they are able to attain in their IB courses.
