References are written by an academic authority such as a teacher.

References give a portrait of what a student is like to teach and will discuss their academic performance from the age of 16 onwards, their potential with regards to higher education as well as their character and suitability for the degree programme they have chosen.

For British and international students, references should be written in English and in the case of students who do not speak English as a first language, references should comment on an applicant’s competency with the language.

Applicants’ family members, friends, partners or ex-partners cannot write references for them.
